Gearbox Design

You can view the 3D model here. A report of the basic analysis can be found here.

Aim -

To design and manufacture a high reduction gearbox for the base rotation of a manipulator mounted on Team Anveshak's 2020 rover overcoming the problems faced in the previous gearbox

Motivation -

The single stage gearbox which was being earlier used was easily backdrivable. In order to overcome this, I designed a two stage gearbox to increase the reduction ratio and hence prevent backdrivability.

What I learnt/applied -
  • Space and weight considerations while designing a gearbox

  • Practical application of course concepts (regarding gear ratios)

  • Practically applying simple mechanics concepts to make powerful real-world models

Progress and Current Status -
  • Analysis done to find required gear ratio

  • 3D model made on Fusion 360

  • Current - Project discarded due to cancellation of the competition due to COVID-19

Rough Timeline -
  • Project started - First week of February

  • Design completed - First week of March

  • Project shelved - 2nd week of March (closure of college)
